The Charm of Chiptunes

I can’t possibly count the number of times I have kicked back on the subway ride to work or school to listen to old videogame music (namely the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, but I digress…). I talked about in my Art of The Angry Birds Theme article about the weight the videogame music once gave to each moment of our old beloved favorites where the graphics can’t always speak for themselves. Listening to the soundtracks of our favorite games brings us right back to the fun and adventure we experienced while playing, bringing the same kind of nostalgia to those songs as the first song you slow danced to, or other songs that marked a memorable event in your life. Although simplistic, 8-bit musicians back in the day used their limited means to create unforgettable songs packed with character that today’s videogame music just can’t quite match.
